How to Make Kala Chana / Black Chickpeas Curry in the Instant Pot

        A warm, flavorful, and absolutely delicious Indian Black Chana Masala is easy to make Indian curry recipe. It is made of black chickpeas. Curry refers to all the dishes, which are soupy and have gravy. The blended mixture of onion, garlic, ginger, tomatoes are used as a base to this delicious black chana curry. It's a super easy dish to make, but you need to cook the masala and the chickpeas properly. It's bursting with flavor and is a healthy vegetarian lunch/dinner recipe.

       There are as many recipes for making black chana, a black chickpea curry, as there are households in India. Serve this crowd-pleaser black chana curry with jeera rice, and any Indian flatbreads, such as chapati and naan, and accompanied by a salad for a complete meal. If you have never cooked Indian food, do not be discouraged.

As long as you can get your hands on some of the main spices, like garam masala, cumin, red chili powder,  and turmeric, you can make these dishes. Almost 25 spices are used in making Indian curries. They are used in different combinations. Indian cuisine ranges from mild to spicy dishes. Serve this with rice and a green salad for a main course or as a simple side dish. 


        Like many Indian recipes, this one starts with making a masala. Masala is a mixture of Indian spices often combined with onion, tomatoes, and then ground into a paste. This paste is then fried in oil to enhance all of the seasonings' flavors. This black chana curry is ideally spooned over rice. Serve with a green salad or a simple vegetable side dish for a complete meal.

Ingredients:
To Prepare Curry Paste:
  • Red Onion 1 medium size
  • Tomato 1 medium size
  • Garlic 3 Cloves 
  • Ginger 15 g
  • Stems from Coriander 2 Tbsp(15 g)
  • Water ¼ Cup
To Prepare Black Chana(Chickpeas) Curry in the Instant Pot:
  • Black Chana/Chickpeas 1 Cup
  • Red chili powder 1 Tbsp 
  • Goda Masala 1 Tsp(You can use Garam Masala too)
  • Turmeric ½ Tsp 
  • Coriander Powder 1 Tsp 
  • Cumin Powder 1 Tsp 
  • Salt 1 Tsp 
  • Coriander leaves 2 Tbsp. 
  • Oil 2 Tbsp 
  • Water 2 Cups
  • Lemon Slices for serving 

Instructions:
  • Wash and soak black chickpeas in the water for 5-6 hours or overnight.

To Prepare Onion-Tomato Paste:
  • Blend onion, tomatoes, ginger-garlic, coriander stems, and water to get a fine paste, and base gravy is ready.

To Prepare Black Chana Curry in the Instant Pot:
  • Turn on the saute mode of the instant pot and heat oil.
  • Splutter cumin and mustard seeds and add prepared onion-tomato paste and sauté for 2-3 minutes or until the raw smell of onion goes away.
  • Add red chili powder, turmeric, coriander-cumin powder, salt, and soaked black chana and give it a quick stir. 
  • Pour water and stir well. 
  • Close the lid of the instant pot and place the vent on the sealing position.
  • Cook on Bean/Chili mode for 25 minutes and then NPR for 10 minutes. 
  • Release the remaining pressure and open the lid and mix well.
  • Now, turn on the saute mode of the instant pot. 
  • Add goda masala/garam masala, and coriander leaves and mix well. 
  • Cook on sauté mode for 2 - 3 minutes or until everything mixed up well. 
  • Garnish with chopped fresh coriander, onion slices, and drizzled some lemon juice on top.
  • Scrumptious Black Chickpeas Curry is ready to serve, serve hot with the chapati, Kulcha, naan, or with jeera rice. Enjoy!!!

How to Store Black Chickpeas Curry:
  • Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for about 4 to 5 days.
  • You can freeze it for 1-2 months in the freezer, thaw overnight in the fridge, heat, and serve.
