How to Make Mango Ukadiche Modak(Steamed Rice and Mango Dumplings with Sweet Coconut Filling in the Instant Pot)

||Ganapati Bappa Moraya||

Mango Ukadiche Modak is Ganpati Bappa’s favorite Naivedyam / Prasadam. Ukadiche Modak is an Indian sweet dumpling made during the festival of Ganesh Chaturthi/Ganapati Festival. It is made from steamed rice flour and mango puree and stuffed with a sweet, juicy mixture of jaggery and grated coconut.

I am a Maharashtrian girl, and the Maharashtra Ganapati Festival(Ganesh Chaturthi) is celebrated with much flair and I am having fond memories of this festival. Maharashtra is the state known for grand-scale Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations. We celebrate this 10-day long festival every year. Where we offer Lord Ganesha varieties of sweets or Modaks as a Naivedyam. The plate containing the Modak is supposed to be filled with 11, 21 pieces of the sweet.

What is Ganesh Chaturthi/Ganapati Festival?

Ganesh Chaturthi is a 10 day Hindu festival celebrated to honor God Ganesha's birthday. God Ganesh is the younger son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. He is honored at the start of rituals and ceremonies as he's considered the God of beginnings. God Ganesha is known by 108 different names. He also is the Lord of arts and sciences and the deva of wisdom. He's widely and dearly referred to as Ganapati or Vinayaka or Vighnaharta(destroyer of obstacles).

When Ganesh Chaturthi is Celebrated?

The festival begins on Shukla Chaturthi and ends on Anant Chaturdashi. Ganesh Chaturthi is an auspicious Hindu festival which is celebrated as a mark of Lord Ganesha's rebirth day. This year, August 22nd marks the beginning of this Ganapati festival.

Mango Ukadiche Modak is totally a delicious and amazing variation of our favorite ukadiche modak. These Yellow-Orange colored modaks look stunning and make a refreshing change from our regular variety. The taste of mangoes in the covering and filling is also very delicious and took these ukadiche modaks to the new awesome level.

I am sharing one more mango recipe before the mango season ends. To make the modaks, I have used fresh mango pulp. But if you can't find fresh mangoes then you can even use canned mango pulp. I enjoy mangoes all through their season and during the off-season I use mango pulp from the can.

So let's make and offer the naivedyam of Ganapathi Bappa’s Favorite Modaka’s and take his blessings.

For shaping the modaks I have used modak molds which are easily available on Amazon.

Preparation Time: 15 Minutes; Cooking Time:10 Minutes

Steaming Time:15 Minutes.

Each Serving of Mango Ukadiche Modak Contains 142 Cal.

Ingredients:

To Make the Stuffing:

  • 1 cup Coconut, Fresh and grated
  • ½ cup Jaggery (Concentrated cane sugar), grated
  • 2 Tbsp Mango Puree
  • ½ Tsp Cardamom Powder
  • 1 Tsp Poppy Seeds
  • 1 Tbsp Ghee (Clarified butter)

To Prepare the Dough/Covering for Modak:

  • 1 Cup Mango Puree
  • 2 Cups Rice Flour
  • 1 Cup Water
  • 1 Tsp Oil
  • ¼ Tsp Salt
  • 1 Tsp Sugar
Instructions:

To Prepare Coconut-Jaggery Stuffing:

  • In a pan, heat ghee and add coconut and roast it for 2-3 minutes on medium to low flame.
  • Now, add Jaggery, cardamom powder, and dry roasted poppy seeds.
  • Mix well, and cook for 3-4 minutes on medium flame.
  • Keep stirring till the mixture blends completely, once the stuffing is ready, transfer to a bowl and let it cool.

To Prepare the Dough:

  • In a pan, add a cup of water and let it boil.
  • Now add salt, sugar, and oil and mix well.
  • Add mango puree and mix well and bring the mixture to boil.
  • Add the rice flour to the boiling mango-water mixture and mix well.
  • Mix it with the help of a spatula and turn off the flame.
  • Cover the pan with a lid for 2-3 minutes.
  • After 3 minutes, transfer the mixture into the bowl.
  • Knead the dough for 3-4  minutes or until the dough becomes soft.
  • Knead the dough well, apply ghee or water to your palms(if necessary since the batter will be too sticky and also hot to work with initially).
  • Once it becomes soft and not breaking, it will be good to make the modaks.
  • Now divide the dough into equal-sized balls(while you work with one ball, keep the rest of the balls covered with wet tissue or towel to avoid them drying out).

To Make the Mango Ukdiche Modak:

  • Grease the modak mold with the oil(you can use Ghee), stuff the dough, and press to the sides to form the shape and make a hole in the center.
  • Stuff the modak with the prepared coconut stuffing and seal the modak with dough.
  • Open the mold gently and place it on the plate, similarly, make the remaining modaks.
  • Line a steamer or pan with turmeric leaf and apply some ghee/oil on the leaf.
  • Transfer the modaks into the turmeric leaf-lined pan and garnish modaks with the saffron strands.

To Steam the Modak into the Instant Pot:

  • Turn on the Instant Pot and add 2 cups of water.
  • Place the trivet and the modak’s pan.
  • Close the lid and steam the modaks for 15 minutes.
  • Quick-release the pressure manually and open the lid.
  • Here, delicious, sweet, and Ganapati Bappa's favorite modaks are ready to serve.
  • Serve hot Mango Ukdiche Modak with some homemade ghee(clarified butter) poured on them. Enjoy!!!
To Make the Modaks without Mold:

  • Flatten the dough ball into a disc between your palms. Bring together edges to form pleats.
  • Now add filling in the created hollow and bring together those pleats slowly as if you are closing a delicate pouch.
  • Similarly, make the remaining Modaks.
  • Grease your steamer lightly with the oil and place the modaks.
  • Steam these modaks for 15 minutes.
  • Serve hot Mango Ukdiche Modak with some homemade ghee(clarified butter) poured on them. Enjoy!!!

Storing and Shelf life:

  • These Mango Ukadiche Modaks stay good in the fridge for 4 to 5 days.

Tips to Make Mango Ukdiche Modak:

  • You can use Alphonso/Kesar Mango Pulp too.
  • You can also line your steamer with banana leaf(I have used turmeric leaf) to get the beautiful aroma of the leaf.
  • You can add dry nuts while preparing the stuffing.
  • You can add milk instead of water while making dough or add half a cup of milk and half a cup of water.
  • You may use oil instead of ghee.
