How to Make Maharashtrian Style Chavalichi Usal

Hello Foodies,

Chavalichi Usal is a Maharashtrian style spicy and flavorful curry or stirs fry dish which is loaded with nutrition. It is a perfect nutritious pulse.

Because of negligible calories and fat, black-eyed peas are the best food for a weight loss plan. Since they have high levels of dietary fiber, they keep you feeling fuller for a longer period of time. My Aai(Mother) makes usal with any legumes, sprouts, or lentils and I have posted other usal/sprouts recipes on the blog already.

Video Recipe:

This usal recipe can also be made with moong or matki/moth bean sprouts, dried green peas, rose cocoa beans, black chickpeas, whole masoor, and even tuvar dal. The chawli usal is tastes best with multigrain flatbread(Thalipeeth), chapati, bhakri, or a side for Varan-Bhat. I usually make usal spicy, but you can tone down the use of red chili powder in the recipe. It also tastes great with bread or pav. I have cooked black-eyed peas in the instant pot and then cooked them with onion and spices.   I love to prepare all kinds of beans in the instant pot and every single time it does cook very well. All beans require a long time to cook on the stovetop, but with the instant pot, this process is much quicker. There are so many kinds of beans and they all cook at different times. Also, cook time change when you cook salad or soup makes a huge difference. Even cook time for soaked or unsoaked beans is not specified or it plays a huge role in timing. I always soak beans, because it eases digestion a lot. So never forget to soak beans for 6-8 hours or overnight, before pressure cooking.

What is Chavali?

Chavali is also known as black-eyed peas, southern pea, cowpea, crowder pea, ‘lobia’ in Hindi, ‘chawli/chavali’ in Marathi, and ‘bobbarlu’ in Telugu. Chavali is an oval-shaped white bean, which you can easily identify through a black spot found at the hilum of the seed. It looks more like a bean but is smaller in size. It has a high amount of proteins and minerals and has about 25% protein which is why it helps in building body immunity and prevents the breakdown of skin collagen.
