How to Cook No-Soak Beans in the Instant Pot

Hello Foodies,

A healthy alternative to canned white/Navy beans that are ready to use in any recipe. I use my Instant Pot to cook beans(no soaking required)! The cooking time for soaked and non-soaked beans is different.

Forget pre-soaking? No worries about pre-soaking and the beans will be fully cooked in only 30 minutes! Cooking beans in the Instant Pot is super fast and cooks a pot of beans with no hands-on attention required. This recipe is perfect for flavorful beans that can be used in many ways. If you are using non-soaked beans, I recommend boiling the beans for about 10 minutes first to break down the lectins.

Why Soaking Dried Beans Is Necessary?

  • Soaking dried beans makes the beans faster to cook.
  • Soaking beans break down some of the complex sugars that may make them hard to digest.
  • Soaking prior to cooking beans can really save you a lot of time.

How to Soak Beans(Overnight Soaking Method)?

  • Rinse the beans in a colander, remove rocks or debris.
  • Transfer the beans to a pot and fill with clean water and add another two inches to the top.
  • The beans will swell as they soak so the extra water is important.
  • Cover the pot and let it sit overnight.
  • The next morning, strain the beans and proceed with your recipe.

How to Quick Soak Beans:

  • If you don't soak beans overnight, you should at least quick-soak.
  • Cover beans with water in a stockpot and bring to a boil.
  • Remove from heat, cover, and let the beans stand for at least one hour.
  • Then you are ready to cook the beans according to the recipe!
  • This quick soaking method makes prepping dry beans a breeze. So go ahead and buy bulk, then store and prep those beans with ease!

How Long to Soak Beans?

  • Soak the beans for a minimum of 5-6 hours and any time up until 8-10 hours.

Add Flavorings, If You Want-

  • To make flavorful beans, you can add a few garlic cloves, green chilies to the pot along with the salt.
  • You could also add herbs, like bay leaves or dried oregano, fresh herbs are good too, such as rosemary, thyme, or cilantro and you'll have a flavorful pot of creamy, tender beans in no time at all.

How to Cook Beans in the Instant Pot without soaking them?

  • Add dried beans in an Instant Pot, cover with water, and set at high pressure for 30 minutes.

You can cook any kind of beans in the instant pot, like:

Black-eyed peas, Black beans, Northern beans, Pinto beans, Chickpeas (Garbanzo beans), Red kidney beans, though Cooking time will vary based on the bean variety and the age of your beans. Check out the cooking timetable in the recipe for specific times!

Delicious Beans Recipes to Try:

Natural Pressure Release or Quick Release?

Let pressure cooker release naturally, or at least for 5-10 minutes. This helps offset some of the appearance problems, resulting in fewer blow-out beans though you'll still get some. The bean cooking liquid also tends to foam up into the steam valve when if you do a quick release; letting the pot depressurize as long as possible helps avoid this. I usually let the release pressure naturally.

  • 1 Cup Navy Beans Soaked in water for 5-6 hours
