How to Dry Roast Coconuts Chips & Flakes in an Air Fryer

Hello Foodies,

I love the nutty taste of roasted coconut and the crispness that's added to the flakes. You can see every single piece of coconut is roasted evenly and crispy. There are actually several different ways to go about roasting coconut and each method will yield you entirely different results.

My absolute favorite is to use the Air Fryer but you can try and decide which one is best and helpful for you.

There are a few techniques for toasting coconut. You can use the stovetop, the oven, and even the microwave. I like the Air Frying method. I found that roasting the coconut in Air Fryer was the fastest way to toast coconut and yielded more even browning than the stovetop, oven, and microwave. They're an extremely easy snack that just takes minutes to make and have endless flavor possibilities.

WHAT IS AN AIR FRYER?

An air fryer is a kitchen appliance that uses convection to rapidly circulate hot air around food to cook and crisp it up.  It’s essentially a mini convection oven that fits perfectly on your countertop.

DO YOU HAVE TO PREHEAT AN AIR FRYER?

Yes, you need to preheat an air fryer when making dry roasted coconuts. Placing them in a hot basket helps give them a great crunch and speed up the process of roasting too.

Why you should roast Coconut in Air Fryer?

Getting store-bought roasted coconuts may seem convenient but they come at a cost to our health and budget. Here’s why I love Roasting of Coconut in the Air Fryer:

  • Always gets an EVENLY roasted, and CRISPY COCONUT, just like we get it from the store.
  • Easy to make.
  • Cheaper than store-bought
  • No added oils!
  • Preservative-free
  • All you need is 5 minutes
  • Longer shelf life.
  • They're Paleo, Whole30, and Vegan, Gluten-free.

To Roast/Toast the Coconut on the Stovetop:

  • Heat a pan on medium to low flame and add a cup of coconut in a pan.
  • Saute and cook for 7-8 minutes, or until the flakes are mostly golden brown.
  • Stir continuously otherwise coconut will burn.
  • The coconut didn't brown evenly even though I was stirring constantly.
  • Some of the coconut flakes were almost burnt while others were barely toasted.

To Roast/Toast the Coconut in the Oven:

  • Preheat oven at 350 F(180 C)
  • Spread a cup of coconut in an even layer over a baking pan lined with parchment paper.
  • Bake at 350°F for 8-10 minutes.
  • Stop to stir after every two minutes.

To Roast/Toast the Coconut in the Microwave:

  • Spread about 1 cup of shredded coconut on a microwave-safe plate.
  • Microwave on high for 4-5 minutes, stopping to stir after every minute.
  • However, the coconut didn't crispen as an air fryer. It remained soft and slightly chewy in the microwave.

Use of Roasted/Toasted Coconut:

  • Air Fryer Roasted Coconut can be used for:
  • Salad toppers,
  • Ground them with peanuts, jaggery and make a ladoos
