How to Make Chilli Idli / Idli Manchurian Recipe / Leftover Idli's Makeover

Hello Foodies,
             Chili Idli/Idli Manchurian is a mouth-watering snack/starter, made using the leftover idlis. It is a quick and delicious snack gets done in less than half an hour. Leftover idlis are great to have as a handy ingredient, you can dish out so many yummy recipes with leftover idli. 


             Chili Idli is a very good option if you want to eat Idli differently, it tastes so good. The outer layer is dipped in the Manchurian batter/sauce while the inside is the Idli. The combination is different where you can enjoy the taste of South Indian cuisine and Chinese cuisine at the same time.

Preparation and Cooking Time: 25 Minutes.

Ingredients:
To Fry Idlis:
  • Idli 6 pcs (I have used leftover idlis here) 
  • All-purpose flour/maida ¼ cup
  • Corn flour 2 tbsp
  • Rice flour  1 Tbsp 
  • Red chili powder ½ Tsp 
  • Salt ¼ Tsp
  • Ginger-garlic paste ½ Tsp 
  • Oil for frying the idlis


To Make Chili Idli/Idli Manchurian:
  • Ginger-Garlic paste 1 Tbsp 
  • Green chili 2-3, finely chopped 
  • Onion ½ small, chopped 
  • Green Pepper ½, chopped 
  • Oil 2 Tsp 
  • Vinegar  1 Tbsp
  • Soy sauce 1 Tbsp 
  • Red chili sauce 1 Tbsp 
  • Tomato sauce 1 Tbsp 
  • Black Pepper ¼ Tsp
  • Salt ½ Tsp
  • Corn flour 1 Tbsp + Water ¼ Cup


Instructions:
To Fry Idlis:
  • Cut the Idlis into bite-sized pieces(leftover Idli works best since it's less crumbly) and keep aside. 
  • Combine maida(APF), cornflour, rice flour, ginger-garlic paste, salt, red chili powder and in a bowl.
  • Add water and make a smooth paste of slightly thick consistency. 
  • Heat oil in a pan and when the oil becomes hot, dip the idlis in the batter and gently drop them in the oil.
  • Fry idli pieces till they turn crispy and golden brown.
  • Once done drain the oil and place it on a paper napkin.


To Make Chili Idli/Idli Manchurian:
  • Heat oil in a pan and add ginger-garlic paste, finely chopped green chilies. 
  • Add onions and green pepper and saute for a minute or two, but do not overcook them. 
  • Add white vinegar, tomato sauce, soy sauce, red chili sauce, cornflour, and water mixture and mix well.
  • Add black pepper, salt, and mix well.
  • Add fried idli pieces and toss them in the sauce to coat them completely.
  • Chili Idli / Idli Manchurian is ready to serve, serve it hot as a snack/starter. Enjoy!!!


Recipe Notes:
  • I always use leftover refrigerated idlis, because when we fried them, they absorb less oil.
  • You can deep fry or shallow fry idlis.
  • If you are using freshly made Idlis, then you can refrigerate them for 30 mins before using.
