Ukdiche Modak/Kayi kadubu/Steamed Modak

गणपती बाप्पाच्या आवडीचे उकडीचे मोदक. Ukdiche Modak is a traditional recipe for Ganesh Chaturthi. Modak is Lord Ganesha's
most favorite food, that's why it is offered to him as naivedya or prasad. So today is Ganesh Chaturthi! Time to make umpteen varieties of modak, Ganesha’s favorite. Here is the Modak recipe, of rice flour shells filled with a succulent mixture of jaggery and coconut. Ukadiche modak is a sweet dumpling very much popular in Maharashtra and south India. Modak can be fried or steamed. Ukadiche Modak is a Marathi word which means Steamed modak. The filling is made of fresh coconut and jaggery, and the outer cover is made up of rice flour. While this mouth-watering delicacy is an inseparable part of Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations. So let's get started!!!






Preparation Time :  20 Minutes ; Cooking Time : 15 Minutes;
Total Time : 35 Minutes.

1 Modak Carries 111 kcal

Ingredients :

1) To prepare Dough
  1. Rice flour 1 cup
  2. Water 1 cup
  3. Butter 1 tbsp
  4. Salt ¼  tsp
  5. Sugar 1 tsp

2) Stuffing for Modak :
  1. Coconut fresh, shredded 1 cup
  2. Jaggery ½ cup
  3. Butter 1 tbsp
  4. Sesame seeds 1 tbsp ( Dry Roast )
  5. Poppy seeds 1 tsp ( Dry Roast )
  6. Cardamom powder ½  tsp
  7. Nutmeg powder ½ tsp
  8. Dry fruits (Almonds, cashew nuts, pistachios and raisins) ,chopped.

Recipe :
1) To prepare Dough :
  1. Take a pan, add a cup of water and let it to boil. Add ghee, salt and sugar to the water. Add the rice flour to the boiled water and mix well. Turn off the flame and cover it up with a lid for 5 mins.
  2. Make a soft dough by slowing adding little water and ghee whenever needed. Once, it is smooth, and not breaking, it will be good for the modaks.
2)To Make Stuffing :

  1. Dry roast the poppy seeds and sesame seeds. Set it aside.
  2. In a pan, add the jaggery to melt and add ghee, once the jaggery melts, add in the fresh grated coconut and mix well.
  3. Now, add the roasted poppy seeds and sesame seeds, chopped dry fruits and cardamom powder, nutmeg powder. Mix well and here stuffing to make modaks is ready.
3) To Make Ukdiche Modak :

  1. Grease the modak mold with ghee, add the dough into it, form the shape, fill the stuffing and close. Bring out of the modak mold. Same way, do all the modaks.
  2. Once all the modaks are done, place them to the steamer decks, which is lined with cloth. Steam for 15- 20 mins in medium flame. Pour in some melted ghee to the steamed hot modak.
  3. Here, delicious, sweet, healthy and Ganapati Bappa`s favorite modaks are ready to served. Enjoy!!!
