Hello Foodies,

Nag Panchami is a traditional festival, on this day worship of snakes observed by Hindus throughout India. Panchami is the fifth day among the fifteen days of the moon's waxing and/or waning. This special day of the snake worship always falls on the fifth day of the Hindu month of Shravan (July/August). (This year Nag Panchami is on 15th August 2018). Hence this is called Naga Panchami. On the Nag Panchami day, cobras(Naga), and snakes are worshipped with milk, sweets, flowers, wheat flour and jaggery lamps(कणकेचे दिवे), Wheat Kheer(गव्हाची खीर) and this puranache dind(पुरणाचे दिंड). In villages, the anthills(वारुळ) where the snakes are thought to reside, are searched. Incense is offered to the anthill as prayer along with milk (a traditional story of folklore to feed milk to the snakes) to ensnare snakes to come out of the anthill. After this, milk is poured into the hole in the anthill as a libation to the snake god.
